Seminars

Democratic Challenges in the Face of “Anti-Gender” Policies in Europe: Analysis and Critical Perspectives

The closing seminar of the European RESIST project, led by Marianne Blidon, aims to analyze anti-feminist and anti-LGBT+ discourses, mobilizations, and policies in Europe, as well as their effects on the people affected and on democratic values. Taking a transnational approach, RESIST has studied the diversity of these movements, their impacts, and the forms of resistance they provoke. The seminar aims to develop a new theoretical framework and prepare a collective publication on this topic.

FSER Award Winners’ Seminar

This triennial seminar, organised by Patrick Mehlen and Cédric Blanpain, brings together the award winners of the Schlumberger Foundation for Education and Research. These are leaders of research teams in the biomedical field whose excellence has been recognized through a grant for their laboratory. These meetings provide an opportunity to share the progress of their work, which covers a wide range of fields within biology. This time also allows for a review of the activities and future prospects of the Cercle FSER association.

Research residencies

The social world of horses

Odile Petit’s project involves writing a book on the social life of horses, based on research in ethology. The authors aim to move beyond traditional images of horses – in the field or at the riding school – to provide a better understanding of their social behaviour. The book will address issues such as relationships between horses, coordination within the group, leadership, the social learning of young horses and the consequences of isolation. The book will combine scientific explanations with field accounts, in order to give readers a behind-the-scenes look at the research and the adventures experienced with the animals.

ATOLL: a risk management tool and catalyst for accelerating ORSEC Heritage plans

ATOLL is a sovereign open-source initiative dedicated to safeguarding heritage at risk from climate and human-induced hazards. The event organised by Roch Payet aims to bring together researchers, crisis experts and technology stakeholders to develop a common operational framework, with a view to accelerating the implementation of ORSEC Heritage plans and extending prevention and preservation methods to unprotected private heritage. [learn more]

Photography prize

Isabelle Scotta

Her residency project focuses on Nice, a seaside resort that straddles the line between dream and fiction. Following Royan and Deauville, her exploration of French seaside resorts continues in Nice, the legendary capital of the Riviera. With its Belle Époque architecture, modernist influences, iconic hotels and the Promenade des Anglais, the city embodies a setting shaped by the collective imagination. Through a nocturnal, cinematic photographic narrative, the project will bring to life the image of a land of contrasts. [Find out more]

Musical Composition Prize

Benjamin Attahir

His project Love is louder is a concerto for clarinet, fans and symphony orchestra. “In addition to their integration as modulated sound sources throughout this piece, these objects – incongruous, you might say – will help create an olfactory dramaturgy, opening up a new space of resonance for the soundscapes through which the soloist will guide us.” The work was commissioned by the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France/Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester/Buffet Crampon, Paris. [Find out more]

Exhibition

Par une langue échappée (By a slip of the tongue), Marseilles Cantini Museum.

To mark the opening of the permanent modern and contemporary art exhibition at the Musée Cantini, the Fondation des Treilles is lending four works from its collection: paintings by Victor Brauner, Max Ernst and Roberto Matta. The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the Musée Cantini’s collections through the lens of the history of Marseille, a Mediterranean city connected to the whole world. [Learn more]

Research residencies

Rediscovering Raymonde Linossier

Sophie Robert‘s project is to gather, classify, and annotate all the documents in order to publish a volume dedicated to a little-known female figure who moved in circles of writers, musicians, and orientalists, and of whom only one published work survives: the shortest novel in the world, Bibi-la-Bibiste. This book would provide an annotated version of the novel, her other writings (related to her literary pursuits, or her involvement with the Biblioteca school, but also during her career as a lawyer and later as an orientalist), the complete correspondence found with Adrienne Monnier, Sylvia Beach, Léon-Paul Fargue, James Joyce, Francis Poulenc, and others, and a tribute dossier that was never published, but for which Léon-Paul Fargue wrote “Une Violette noire” (A Black Violet).

Armenian Youth: Between Real and Imagined Armenia, Between War and Revolution

Cécile Lefevre’s research project focuses on the aspirations of Armenian youth (young people in Armenia and the diaspora, in a cross-cutting manner) after the 2018 Velvet Revolution. It is based on a collection of individual and group interviews with some thirty young people. The investigation, which began in the post-revolutionary fervor, has evolved due to tragic events, as the 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan claimed the lives of over 4,000 young Armenians. Since the fragile ceasefire, Russia’s entry into the war in Ukraine has also occurred, leading to Russians settling in Armenia (significantly changing the situation for young Armenians in the job market and migration prospects), the loss of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, and the diplomatic discussions of summer 2025… All these geopolitical events directly impact young people. The residency will allow for the writing of the first two articles currently in progress, based on this corpus of interviews: one on the concept and diversity of youth engagement in Armenia after the revolution and during a period of latent war, and the other on the reappropriation of Armenian identity by young people in the Armenian diaspora in France. It will also include reflection on a book project. [learn more]

Author’s residencies

Isabelle Desesquelles

“When I write, I seem to hear another heart beating, its two ventricles: reality and fiction. 1867, one woman photographs another. They are close, just a few steps apart. Close also because the one in front of the lens is the photographer’s niece. Half a century after this photo session, the model’s daughter will write about the photographer. Each, one with images, the other with words, now belongs to eternity, so profoundly have they marked their time and ours. The eye of the first, the voice of the second, managed to make visible what would otherwise have remained invisible. To reveal, that is the essence for them. The first photographed many who belonged to Victorian high society: painters like Watts and several Pre-Raphaelites, poets like Tennyson and Taylor, Longfellow, and Browning, as well as novelists like Trollope, Carlyle, and Lewis Carroll, and also…” Scientists like Herschel and Darwin posed for her. The second wrote about the greatest novelists: Henry James, Thomas Hardy, Katherine Mansfield, the Brontë sisters, Leo Tolstoy, and many others. In turn, she wrote a body of work unlike any other. We seek stories; the story of these two women I wish to tell.” [read more]

Photography prize

Juliette-Andrea Elie

Her project is drawn to a little-known ancestral tradition: « sea silk». A golden filament used as an anchor for a shell called the Giant Nacre, byssus was woven until the shell was threatened by a parasite and subsequently protected. A mythical material, featured in the works of Homer and Jules Verne, it is now preserved by the last weavers of Sant’Antioco (Sardinia). Between technical skill and a sacred connection to the sea, these women perpetuate a discreet knowledge, deeply rooted in their land.

After documenting the last remaining sanctuaries of the Giant Nacre, Juliette-Andréa Elie wishes to conduct a photographic investigation into these practices and island landscapes, incorporating artistic interventions (embroidery, reliefs), giving space to a necessary imagination. Her « augmented photographs» become acts of reparation, a dialogue between memory and resilience. A quest for coexistence, where the living hybridize, reinventing possible worlds. [read more]

Seminar

The Rise of Complex Multicellularity: Uncovering Fundamental Principles Through In-Depth Lineage Comparisons

The transition from unicellular organisms to complex multicellularity is a key step in the evolution of life, but its mechanisms remain poorly understood. Research has largely focused on individual lineages, while the constraints, evolutionary drivers, and genomic tools can vary for each lineage. It is therefore necessary to identify a comprehensive framework to explain the common molecular principles and mechanisms of the transition to complex multicellularity in eukaryotes. This symposium, organized by Susana Coelho and Dolf Weigers, will bring together a group of leading researchers to identify universal principles for the emergence of complex development.

Research workshop

Describing the Works: Rethinking the Label

A central element of museum interpretation, the label—that small text affixed near exhibited objects—is the subject of much debate (length, placement, content, author, intended audience, etc.). Since the late 18th century, the function and form of labels have evolved alongside the museum’s mission. Often considered the “voice” of the artworks, their authority is regularly questioned. A growing number of initiatives promote a pluralistic approach, including co-written texts intended for different audiences, translated texts, or texts exploring various presentation methods and modes of reading. While well-covered in museology textbooks, the topic remains relatively unexplored by the humanities. The workshop organized by Yaël Kreplak will finalize the first original synthesis in French on the subject, illustrated and designed by researchers, professionals, and artists.

Research residencies

Anthropogenic Disruption: The Impossible Biotechnological Control of Life

The living world has been profoundly and irrevocably transformed by the deployment of biotechnologies in various fields (industrial agriculture, biomedicine, genome editing, stem cell research, reproduction, etc.). Drawing on the concept of “anthropic biology” developed by Hannah Landecker, Céline Lafontaine‘s project aims to analyze these transformations within the context of the Anthropocene. Anthropogenic biology concerns the unpredictable effects of the large-scale production and proliferation of biological matter in academic and industrial laboratories. Based on interviews with researchers, this book examines the long-term consequences of scientific practices in the history of life on Earth.

How can we think about emptiness ?

Unlike non-being, nothingness, and void, the existence of emptiness was indeed demonstrated in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, marking the birth of physical science. But what is the link between physical emptiness and metaphysical emptiness, a source of both fear and attraction? Adèle Van Reeth‘s residency will attempt to answer this philosophical question. From Blaise Pascal to Virginia Woolf, from everyday life to monastic life, from Henry David Thoreau to Cyrano de Bergerac, the ambivalence of emptiness leads philosophy to recognize its own limitations and to pass the baton to what only experience can explore, beyond the concept.

Author’s residencies

Ella Balaert

She returns this month to work on her second novel. In My Real Name Is Elisabeth (Éditions du Sous-sol, 2025), she recounts her investigation into the psychiatric journey of her great-grandmother, Elisabeth, diagnosed as schizophrenic in the 1950s, lobotomized and interned for 17 years. [en savoir plus]

This process is orchestrated, in part, by a small number of secreted morphogens, which form activity gradients within tissues. Several laboratories are currently exploring a new and still poorly understood “biological world”: how these signals are secreted, diffuse, and interact with the matrix within the extracellular space of cells with different biophysical properties. The goal of this seminar, organized by Pascal Thérond, is to promote cross-fertilization among these research programs. It will be the first conference to bring together leading experts working on these aspects in metazoans.

Research residencies

Latest News from the Moon

Jessica Flahaut’s book explores the Moon from several perspectives: its geological history in light of recent discoveries, its connections to Earth, 20th-century space exploration, the resurgence of lunar exploration in recent years, and upcoming missions. While the topic might seem familiar, it lies at the heart of significant scientific, technological, and geopolitical issues at the end of this decade, which will witness a new race to the Moon (with Chinese and American crewed missions announced for 2027/2029). This book aims to be both a tool for understanding, a witness to history as it unfolds, and a bridge between science and culture. [learn more]

Author’s residency

Adèle Yon

Last month we welcomed Adèle, who will continue her residency in March. Born in Paris in 1994, she is an investigator, writer, cook, and teacher. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and a film studies researcher, she began writing while working on her thesis at the SACRe research-creation laboratory.

In My real name is Elisabeth (Éditions du Sous-Sol), published in February 2025, she recounts her investigation into the psychiatric history of her great-grandmother, Elisabeth, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1950s, lobotomized, and institutionalized for 17 years. In this hybrid novel-thesis, Adèle Yon presents a situated research project, revealing its construction, its process, and the emotions that permeate it. During her residency at the Fondation des Treilles, she will be working on her next book.

Ella Balaert

will join the Foundation this month to begin work on his new novel: “My project is to write a novel whose main character is a ventriloquist puppeteer. He has two bodies, his own organic body and the puppet body, and goes through adventures that lead him to question his identity, the nature of his voice, and his own degree of reality. This text follows on from my previous books, extending and uniting the themes of the mask, reality in its relationship to fiction, and madness.”[learn more]

Heritage residency

Aurore Gallien Guédy

The Fondation des Treilles and the École du Louvre have decided to collaborate on studying and promoting the Foundation’s heritage while fostering the professional development of the School’s students. As part of this agreement, we will welcome Aurore Gallien-Guédy in 2026, a Master’s student in Art History, Archaeology, and Museology. Her research aims to create a portrait of Anne Gruner Schlumberger through the study of her personal library, viewed as a reflection of her artistic tastes, her network, and her broad curiosity across numerous fields.

This seminar, organized by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent and Sophie Bancquart, extends and complements the 2023 seminar, which shed light on Michel Serres’ relationship with science and technology. The goal of this second session is to finalize a collaborative book. Indeed, despite the popularity of the author of Petite Poucette, Michel Serres is entirely absent from philosophical studies in France, while he is the subject of numerous works in other countries. The challenge, therefore, is to situate Michel Serres within the great French tradition of the philosophy of science and technology.

What if? The possibilities of history and social sciences in the service of analyzing contemporary crises

For the past thirty years, the world has been experiencing a period of uncertainty marked by economic, political, and environmental crises that challenge the very idea of progress and blur the line between reality and fiction. In this context, counterfactual reasoning—imagining what would have happened if the past had been different—is playing an increasingly important role. Both a symptom of anxiety about the future and a fruitful intellectual tool, it lies at the intersection of history, science, literature, and the arts. This seminar, organized by Pierre Singaravélou and Quentin Deluermoz, proposes a collective exploration of these different forms of counterfactual reasoning in order to better understand contemporary crises and broaden the possibilities of the present.

Research residency

The “global potential for forest restoration”. Describing the world and prescribing its uses.

Faced with climate change, large-scale tree planting is being considered as a carbon sequestration solution, which raises the question of where to plant. Nassima Adbelghafour‘s residency project aims to analyze how different actors map “global forest restoration potentials” and the associated scientific controversies. By focusing on the counterfactual and prescriptive dimensions of these potentials, it examines the construction of a geopolitics of carbon, at the intersection of scientific knowledge and political choices about desirable futures. [learn more]

Research

Prix des archives

Matteo Bafico

Matteo Bafico holds a doctorate in French literature. His research interests focus on 20th-century French literature, and more specifically on Franco-Italian literary relations, literary journal studies, correspondence, and European intellectual networks during the interwar period.

His project « André Gide as Seen by Léon Pierre-Quint: Archives, Correspondence, and Testimonies from 1924 to 1952 » aims to situate Pierre-Quint’s study, *André Gide, sa vie, son œuvre* (1932–1952), within the context of literary life from the 1920s to the 1950s and the early period of Gide criticism. Based on a cross-disciplinary analysis of archives, correspondence, and unpublished manuscripts, this project seeks to approach Pierre-Quint’s study not as an isolated critical work, but as a tool for shedding new light on André Gide and his milieu. [learn more]

Creation

Prix de la composition

Born in Toulouse in 1989, Benjamin Attahir began by learning the violin and then, very early on, developed a passion for composition. Winner of numerous awards, his works are performed by various ensembles and orchestras. He is the composer of five operas, the premieres of which he also conducted.

His project « Love is Louder » is a concerto for clarinet, fans, and symphony orchestra. “Beyond their integration as modulated sound sources throughout the piece, these objects—incongruous, you might say—will create an olfactory dramaturgy, opening a new space of resonance for the soundscapes through which the soloist will guide us.” The commission for this work is the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France / Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester / Buffet Crampon, Paris. [learn more]

Seminars and research workshops

Handbook for the History of Quantum Optics

This workshop, organized by Gautier Depambour, Sara Ducci, and Florent Baboux, focuses on the history of quantum optics — a theoretical and experimental field that emerged in the 1960s, initially centered on fundamental questions (free radiation, matter-radiation interaction, foundations of quantum mechanics), and from the 1980s onward oriented towards applications, giving rise to numerous quantum technologies (cryptography, simulation, metrology, teleportation, quantum computing). The objective is to bring together key actors to prepare a collective book (likely with Oxford University Press), stimulate exchanges, collect oral history testimonies, and define complementary chapters.

Size control and density regulation in living cells – mechanisms and physiological impact of crowding homeostasis

In recent years, the integration of physical chemistry concepts has profoundly changed molecular biology, but the regulation of crowding (density homeostasis) remains poorly understood — it is disrupted in cancer and aging. A key question is how biomass production is coordinated with the expansion of cell volume to maintain constant crowding and how variations in crowding affect physiology. The seminar organized by Matthieu Piel aims to bring together multidisciplinary experts and model organisms to exchange ideas, confront their perspectives, and develop testable models on the regulation and effects of crowding.

Research residency

Historical cryptography and artificial intelligence in the service of modern texts

Camille Desenclos

Frequently, historians are confronted with encrypted documents whose decipherment has not been preserved. Aside from a few rare cases (associated cipher tables), they remain helpless in the face of these documents whose content remains sealed to them. To address this need, international projects and occasional collaborations between historians and cryptographers have been carried out in recent years. Both, however, face several difficulties: the absence of AI methods capable of transcribing the thousands of pages encrypted with glyphs unique to each writer, the loss of modern deciphering techniques, and the difficulty of establishing collaborations between the humanities and hard sciences. This stay is therefore intended to be the starting point for connecting the expertise of researchers from four fields – cryptography, history, AI, and linguistics – in order to decrypt historical encrypted documents, sometimes left dormant for several centuries. [learn more]

Exhibition

Our 2015 Photography Prize winner, Sophie Zénon, will exhibit her project “The Humus of the World” from November 22, 2025, to March 8, 2026, at the Château d’Eau in Toulouse. Works will be loaned by the Foundation for this event. The opening reception will take place on November 21. [learn more]

Author’s residency

Cédric Dentant

This writing project aims to tell the story of plants without speaking on their behalf, in order to encounter them differently. Their way of existing, very different from ours, seems almost extraterrestrial. To describe them, the author therefore chooses to venture into the extraordinary, into extreme areas such as high altitudes, where humans do not live, but where plants thrive. [learn more]

Photography Residency

Éponine Momenceau

Éponine Momenceau works on trace and memory. Her project focuses on attempting to capture the experience of time in an image. It is a work on the decomposition of time through the recording of very short video image sequences, with the aim of shaping a body of images in the form of a series. [learn more]

Dana Cojbuc

The series En Levko will continue her poetic and artistic research, taking as its starting point the mineral and lunar landscape of the village of Volax on the island of Tinos in Greece. This work will allow her to deepen her explorations of white, considered in its entirety as color, presence, and essence. [learn more]
