Seminar

The Rise of Complex Multicellularity: Uncovering Fundamental Principles Through In-Depth Lineage Comparisons

The transition from unicellular organisms to complex multicellularity is a key step in the evolution of life, but its mechanisms remain poorly understood. Research has largely focused on individual lineages, while the constraints, evolutionary drivers, and genomic tools can vary for each lineage. It is therefore necessary to identify a comprehensive framework to explain the common molecular principles and mechanisms of the transition to complex multicellularity in eukaryotes. This symposium, organized by Susana Coelho and Dolf Weigers, will bring together a group of leading researchers to identify universal principles for the emergence of complex development.

Research workshop

Describing the Works: Rethinking the Label

A central element of museum interpretation, the label—that small text affixed near exhibited objects—is the subject of much debate (length, placement, content, author, intended audience, etc.). Since the late 18th century, the function and form of labels have evolved alongside the museum’s mission. Often considered the “voice” of the artworks, their authority is regularly questioned. A growing number of initiatives promote a pluralistic approach, including co-written texts intended for different audiences, translated texts, or texts exploring various presentation methods and modes of reading. While well-covered in museology textbooks, the topic remains relatively unexplored by the humanities. The workshop organized by Yaël Kreplak will finalize the first original synthesis in French on the subject, illustrated and designed by researchers, professionals, and artists.

Research residencies

Anthropogenic Disruption: The Impossible Biotechnological Control of Life

The living world has been profoundly and irrevocably transformed by the deployment of biotechnologies in various fields (industrial agriculture, biomedicine, genome editing, stem cell research, reproduction, etc.). Drawing on the concept of “anthropic biology” developed by Hannah Landecker, Céline Lafontaine‘s project aims to analyze these transformations within the context of the Anthropocene. Anthropogenic biology concerns the unpredictable effects of the large-scale production and proliferation of biological matter in academic and industrial laboratories. Based on interviews with researchers, this book examines the long-term consequences of scientific practices in the history of life on Earth.

How can we think about emptiness ?

Unlike non-being, nothingness, and void, the existence of emptiness was indeed demonstrated in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, marking the birth of physical science. But what is the link between physical emptiness and metaphysical emptiness, a source of both fear and attraction? Adèle Van Reeth‘s residency will attempt to answer this philosophical question. From Blaise Pascal to Virginia Woolf, from everyday life to monastic life, from Henry David Thoreau to Cyrano de Bergerac, the ambivalence of emptiness leads philosophy to recognize its own limitations and to pass the baton to what only experience can explore, beyond the concept.

Seminar

From Molecular Structure to Systems Biology

The morphogenesis of multicellular organisms relies on the coordination of growth, structuring, and cell fate specification during development. This process is orchestrated, in part, by a small number of secreted morphogens, which form activity gradients within tissues. Several laboratories are currently exploring a new and still poorly understood “biological world”: how these signals are secreted, diffuse, and interact with the matrix within the extracellular space of cells with different biophysical properties. The goal of this seminar, organized by Pascal Thérond, is to promote cross-fertilization among these research programs. It will be the first conference to bring together leading experts working on these aspects in metazoans.

Research residencies

Latest News from the Moon

Jessica Flahaut’s book explores the Moon from several perspectives: its geological history in light of recent discoveries, its connections to Earth, 20th-century space exploration, the resurgence of lunar exploration in recent years, and upcoming missions. While the topic might seem familiar, it lies at the heart of significant scientific, technological, and geopolitical issues at the end of this decade, which will witness a new race to the Moon (with Chinese and American crewed missions announced for 2027/2029). This book aims to be both a tool for understanding, a witness to history as it unfolds, and a bridge between science and culture. [learn more]

Author’s residency

Adèle Yon

Last month we welcomed Adèle, who will continue her residency in March. Born in Paris in 1994, she is an investigator, writer, cook, and teacher. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and a film studies researcher, she began writing while working on her thesis at the SACRe research-creation laboratory.

In My real name is Elisabeth (Éditions du Sous-Sol), published in February 2025, she recounts her investigation into the psychiatric history of her great-grandmother, Elisabeth, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1950s, lobotomized, and institutionalized for 17 years. In this hybrid novel-thesis, Adèle Yon presents a situated research project, revealing its construction, its process, and the emotions that permeate it. During her residency at the Fondation des Treilles, she will be working on her next book.

Ella Balaert

will join the Foundation this month to begin work on his new novel: “My project is to write a novel whose main character is a ventriloquist puppeteer. He has two bodies, his own organic body and the puppet body, and goes through adventures that lead him to question his identity, the nature of his voice, and his own degree of reality. This text follows on from my previous books, extending and uniting the themes of the mask, reality in its relationship to fiction, and madness.”[learn more]

Heritage residency

Aurore Gallien Guédy

The Fondation des Treilles and the École du Louvre have decided to collaborate on studying and promoting the Foundation’s heritage while fostering the professional development of the School’s students. As part of this agreement, we will welcome Aurore Gallien-Guédy in 2026, a Master’s student in Art History, Archaeology, and Museology. Her research aims to create a portrait of Anne Gruner Schlumberger through the study of her personal library, viewed as a reflection of her artistic tastes, her network, and her broad curiosity across numerous fields.

This seminar, organized by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent and Sophie Bancquart, extends and complements the 2023 seminar, which shed light on Michel Serres’ relationship with science and technology. The goal of this second session is to finalize a collaborative book. Indeed, despite the popularity of the author of Petite Poucette, Michel Serres is entirely absent from philosophical studies in France, while he is the subject of numerous works in other countries. The challenge, therefore, is to situate Michel Serres within the great French tradition of the philosophy of science and technology.

What if? The possibilities of history and social sciences in the service of analyzing contemporary crises

For the past thirty years, the world has been experiencing a period of uncertainty marked by economic, political, and environmental crises that challenge the very idea of progress and blur the line between reality and fiction. In this context, counterfactual reasoning—imagining what would have happened if the past had been different—is playing an increasingly important role. Both a symptom of anxiety about the future and a fruitful intellectual tool, it lies at the intersection of history, science, literature, and the arts. This seminar, organized by Pierre Singaravélou and Quentin Deluermoz, proposes a collective exploration of these different forms of counterfactual reasoning in order to better understand contemporary crises and broaden the possibilities of the present.

Research residency

The “global potential for forest restoration”. Describing the world and prescribing its uses.

Faced with climate change, large-scale tree planting is being considered as a carbon sequestration solution, which raises the question of where to plant. Nassima Adbelghafour‘s residency project aims to analyze how different actors map “global forest restoration potentials” and the associated scientific controversies. By focusing on the counterfactual and prescriptive dimensions of these potentials, it examines the construction of a geopolitics of carbon, at the intersection of scientific knowledge and political choices about desirable futures. [learn more]

Prix des archives

Matteo Bafico

Matteo Bafico holds a doctorate in French literature. His research interests focus on 20th-century French literature, and more specifically on Franco-Italian literary relations, literary journal studies, correspondence, and European intellectual networks during the interwar period.

His project « André Gide as Seen by Léon Pierre-Quint: Archives, Correspondence, and Testimonies from 1924 to 1952 » aims to situate Pierre-Quint’s study, *André Gide, sa vie, son œuvre* (1932–1952), within the context of literary life from the 1920s to the 1950s and the early period of Gide criticism. Based on a cross-disciplinary analysis of archives, correspondence, and unpublished manuscripts, this project seeks to approach Pierre-Quint’s study not as an isolated critical work, but as a tool for shedding new light on André Gide and his milieu. [learn more]

Prix de la composition

Born in Toulouse in 1989, Benjamin Attahir began by learning the violin and then, very early on, developed a passion for composition. Winner of numerous awards, his works are performed by various ensembles and orchestras. He is the composer of five operas, the premieres of which he also conducted.

His project « Love is Louder » is a concerto for clarinet, fans, and symphony orchestra. “Beyond their integration as modulated sound sources throughout the piece, these objects—incongruous, you might say—will create an olfactory dramaturgy, opening a new space of resonance for the soundscapes through which the soloist will guide us.” The commission for this work is the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France / Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester / Buffet Crampon, Paris. [learn more]

This workshop, organized by Gautier Depambour, Sara Ducci, and Florent Baboux, focuses on the history of quantum optics — a theoretical and experimental field that emerged in the 1960s, initially centered on fundamental questions (free radiation, matter-radiation interaction, foundations of quantum mechanics), and from the 1980s onward oriented towards applications, giving rise to numerous quantum technologies (cryptography, simulation, metrology, teleportation, quantum computing). The objective is to bring together key actors to prepare a collective book (likely with Oxford University Press), stimulate exchanges, collect oral history testimonies, and define complementary chapters.

Size control and density regulation in living cells – mechanisms and physiological impact of crowding homeostasis

In recent years, the integration of physical chemistry concepts has profoundly changed molecular biology, but the regulation of crowding (density homeostasis) remains poorly understood — it is disrupted in cancer and aging. A key question is how biomass production is coordinated with the expansion of cell volume to maintain constant crowding and how variations in crowding affect physiology. The seminar organized by Matthieu Piel aims to bring together multidisciplinary experts and model organisms to exchange ideas, confront their perspectives, and develop testable models on the regulation and effects of crowding.

Research residency

Historical cryptography and artificial intelligence in the service of modern texts

Camille Desenclos

Frequently, historians are confronted with encrypted documents whose decipherment has not been preserved. Aside from a few rare cases (associated cipher tables), they remain helpless in the face of these documents whose content remains sealed to them. To address this need, international projects and occasional collaborations between historians and cryptographers have been carried out in recent years. Both, however, face several difficulties: the absence of AI methods capable of transcribing the thousands of pages encrypted with glyphs unique to each writer, the loss of modern deciphering techniques, and the difficulty of establishing collaborations between the humanities and hard sciences. This stay is therefore intended to be the starting point for connecting the expertise of researchers from four fields – cryptography, history, AI, and linguistics – in order to decrypt historical encrypted documents, sometimes left dormant for several centuries. [learn more]

Exhibition

Our 2015 Photography Prize winner, Sophie Zénon, will exhibit her project “The Humus of the World” from November 22, 2025, to March 8, 2026, at the Château d’Eau in Toulouse. Works will be loaned by the Foundation for this event. The opening reception will take place on November 21. [learn more]

Author’s residency

Cédric Dentant

This writing project aims to tell the story of plants without speaking on their behalf, in order to encounter them differently. Their way of existing, very different from ours, seems almost extraterrestrial. To describe them, the author therefore chooses to venture into the extraordinary, into extreme areas such as high altitudes, where humans do not live, but where plants thrive. [learn more]

Photography Residency

Éponine Momenceau

Éponine Momenceau works on trace and memory. Her project focuses on attempting to capture the experience of time in an image. It is a work on the decomposition of time through the recording of very short video image sequences, with the aim of shaping a body of images in the form of a series. [learn more]

Dana Cojbuc

The series En Levko will continue her poetic and artistic research, taking as its starting point the mineral and lunar landscape of the village of Volax on the island of Tinos in Greece. This work will allow her to deepen her explorations of white, considered in its entirety as color, presence, and essence. [learn more]

Seminars and research workshops

Cell replacement strategies in the visual system: insights from development

This research workshop, organized by Michel Cayouette and Seth Blackshaw, addresses the topic of blinding diseases caused by the loss of retinal cells. To counter this, recent scientific advances have focused on regenerating these cells through natural developmental processes. However, a lack of knowledge in several key areas has hampered progress in retinal cell therapy. To overcome these obstacles and find solutions, this workshop will bring together experts in visual system development, stem cells, and cellular reprogramming.

Ancient DNA from the seafloor to predict the fate of plankton in a future Ocean – Challenges and Opportunities in Paleogenomics

This seminar, organized by Chris Bowler, will address the theme of the oceans of the future. Microscopic marine plankton have played a key role in the evolution of the Earth system. Understanding how they will react to climate change is crucial, but remains challenging today. To achieve this, it is important to study how these organisms have adapted to past changes over thousands of years. Ancient DNA contained in marine sediments makes it possible to explore this long-term adaptation. Although paleogenomics is still underdeveloped in the marine field, it could make it possible to analyze these evolutionary processes at the molecular level and their implications for the future of marine ecosystems.

GlycoFrontiers: pushing the boundaries through interdisciplinary innovation

This seminar, organized by Rebekka Wild, will address pressing questions in glycobiology and proteoglycan research. Participants will contribute their specialized knowledge, drawing on cutting-edge methodologies in biology, biophysics, and bioinformatics. The goal is to collaboratively define a strategic roadmap for addressing ambitious research challenges through an interdisciplinary approach. [learn more]

Research residencies

The digital edition of the Francien corpus

Guillaume Métayer and his team will work on the ANR project “Anatole France Source,” which will produce—primarily online—the first truly complete (many pages recovered) and critical edition of the works of Anatole France (1844-1924). The marginalization of this Nobel Prize winner in literature in literary and intellectual historiography, as well as among the general public, prompts a profound reflection on the history of literary, aesthetic, and political values. They will meet at Les Treilles to finalize the “Anatole France Source” website.

Historians’ desire for the novel

Aude Deruelle explores historians’ renewed interest in the novel, both as an object of reading, criticism, and as a literary practice. The author proposes to analyze this desire for the novel among historians by placing literary studies at the center of the dialogue between literature and history. The study is based on historians’ literary experiments, their readings and critiques of novels, while also evoking, in a sideways manner, the interest of other humanities in the novel.

Verifying the supposed increases in tree mortality in the world’s tropical forests

Daniel Zuleta and David Bauman‘s project investigates abrupt changes in tree mortality in tropical forests, a less well-documented topic than in temperate regions. Using data from permanent forest plots, it aims to analyze temporal trends in mortality and their effects on forest dynamics and biodiversity. This project will provide crucial information for carbon budgeting, remote sensing validation, climate-vegetation forecasting, and will serve to guide biodiversity conservation policies. [learn more]

Heritage residency

In 2014, Olivier Bessard-Banquy participated in a writing residency at Les Treilles, which allowed him to make significant progress on his study, “La Fabrique du livre,” on literary publishing in the 20th century, published in 2016. He is now preparing a new work: a new synthesis project bringing together and expanding his previous works, and requiring new research in our archival collections. [learn more]

Author’s residency

Olivier Ciechelski

The Book of prodigies, his next novel, tells the story of Nora, a young, religious woman who joins the police force in the hope of bringing justice and peace to the streets of her city. But a tragedy shakes her faith in God and her trust in human justice, revealing a dark side and an unsuspected power within her. [learn more]

Photography Prize

Aurélia Frey

wishes to create a portrait of her grandmother, marked by her dual belonging to two lands dear to her heart: the Cévennes, where she was born, and Italy, which she chose and loved intensely. This project, entitled On the Shoulder of Time, is inspired by a poem evoking memory and the passage of time. Through photographs taken in these two Mediterranean regions, Aurélia wants to create an assemblage mixing memories, imagination, past and present, to pay tribute to the one who knew how to amaze her and make her dream. [learn more]

Seminars and research workshops

Shared Logic

This research workshop organized by Julie Brumberg-Chaumont aims at the scientific structuring of the ‘Network for the Interdisciplinary Study of Logic’ (Interlog network). The network proposes to study logic as a boundary object, logic as structure, norm, competence, and discipline, understood within a variety of social, cultural, and political configurations, within an intercultural and global approach to logic. The meeting will allow for the creation of a common language as well as a foundation of shared skills and methods.

The physiology of inter-organ communication

This seminar organized by François Leulier and Irène Michel-Aliaga, invites us to discover the complex network of interactions between the organs of an organism. The aim is to study the different ways in which organs communicate with each other, the influence that external factors such as diet or microorganisms have on these exchanges, and finally, the plasticity of the organism, meaning its ability to adapt by “reprogramming” this communication to maintain balance in the face of disruptions.

Research residency

A study of gender dynamics in Iranian film adaptations of American literature

Zahra Nazemi’s study examines how Iranian cinema adapts American literature, with a particular focus on gender politics. It explores how Iranian filmmakers incorporate cultural elements such as dress, religion, and social roles, reshaping American concepts of masculinity and femininity to fit Iranian cultural and ideological frameworks.

Heritage residency

The correspondence between Jacques Rivière and Jean Schlumberger

Olivier Dhénin will study the correspondence between Jacques Rivière and Jean Schlumberger published by Jean-Pierre Cap at Schlumberger’s request in 1980. It is essential for anyone who wants to understand the genesis of the foundation of the Nouvelle Revue Française of which Rivière became the emblematic director. [learn more]

Author’s residency prize

Olivier Ciechelski continues his stay at the foundation to write his next novel, which tells the story of Nora, a very religious young woman who joined the police in the hope of bringing justice and peace to the streets of her city. This book falls within the genres of noir fiction, vigilante movie, fantasy, and the Golden Legend.

Jean-Noël Orengo returns to residency for his project Paris and the Nothing, in which the narrator, Noël Stavisky, has become the personal secretary of Alberto Giacometti and Samuel Beckett. They see him more as a model than a secretary, and encourage him to undertake extreme experiences necessary for their inspiration. [learn more]

Archives Prize

Ophelie Colomb‘s project will revolve around the preparatory manuscript of ‘Souvenirs de la cour d’assises’ by André Gide: archives straddling law and literature’. This project aims to fill a gap in the landscape of genetic editions of Gide’s work and invites the exploration of the intertextual relationships that bind Gide’s archives and judicial archives. [learn more]

Photo Exhibition

Karine Pierre

The photographs of our winner of the 2021 photography residency prize will be exhibited at the Jacqueline de Romilly media library in Draguignan in the Var, from July 5 to August 31. Her project “Shredded Lands” tells the story of the Gaza Hospital building in Beirut, which was destroyed by the militiamen of the Shiite party between 1985 and 1987, and has become an empty shell to which refugees and migrants flock. Gaza Hospital has thus become a condensation of the history of migratory movements from the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Free entry. [learn more]

Seminars

Systemic Neuroscience of Sensory Perception

This seminar, organized by Lisa Roux, will address a central question in neuroscience: how sensory stimuli are detected and processed by the body, ultimately determining behavior. The objective of this workshop is to share ideas on the current state of sensory physiology and how it can benefit from a systemic approach. By bringing together specialists from different sensory modalities (vision, olfaction, hearing, somatosensation, and taste), it will foster new concepts and contribute to the extraction of general principles about sensory processing.

The Untranslatables of the Three Monotheisms

This seminar, organized by Barbara Cassin and David Lemler, aims to develop a “Dictionary of the Untranslatables of the Three Monotheisms”, on the model of the European Vocabulary of Philosophies, based on a historical, conceptual, and linguistic reflection on the translation of sacred texts. In a globalized society where fundamentalisms clash, it is necessary to complicate the universal, far from any catechism of values. A good way to complicate the universal is the comparative reading of sacred texts based on the languages in which they are written.[learn more]

Research residencies

Cheating Death

Already a director of short films, Inès Loizillon is developing her first feature film, which will chronicle the hospitalization of a teenage girl who refuses to eat. Seeking to reflect on the perception of the world of a person suffering from behavioral disorders, she develops the idea that anorexia nervosa and cinema share a common theme: questioning, controlling, and obsessing over the body and image. During her stay, she intends to investigate the psychiatrists (François Tosquelle, Jean-Oury, etc.) who have changed traditional psychiatry in France.

Patrimony residency

The Correspondence between Jean Paulhan and Jean Schlumberger

The goal of this heritage visit is to begin to establish the correspondence exchanged between Jean Schlumberger and Jean Paulhan. All of the letters are gathered in the Jean Schlumberger collection at Les Treilles, comprising 111 original documents for Jean Schlumberger and 188 copies for Jean Paulhan. The immediate goal is to copy the entire collection and begin to decipher as much as possible, the goal being, of course, to establish this correspondence as scientifically as possible. [Learn more]

Creation

Author’s residency

Olivier Ciechelski

The Book of Prodigies, his next novel, tells the story of Nora, a young, religious woman who joins the police in the hope of bringing justice and peace to the streets of her city. But a tragedy shakes her faith in God and her trust in human justice, revealing a dark side and an unsuspected power within her. This book borrows from the noir novel, the vigilante movie, the fantastic and the Golden Legend, in the hope of bringing together the ultra-contemporary and the immemorial time of myths and legends.

Jean-Noël Orengo

In his project Paris and Nothingness, the narrator calls himself Noël Stavisky and in 1937 became the private secretary of Alberto Giacometti and Samuel Beckett. Very quickly, they became fathers to him. They considered him more of a model than a secretary, and pushed him to extreme experiences necessary for their inspiration: weight loss, tramping, multiple logorrhea… Wanting to be and knowing himself to be a poet, Stavisky benefits as much as he undergoes their influence, from which he often violently detaches himself… this collaboration will nevertheless allow him to create an impossible work uniting writing, sculpture, painting and staging.[lean more]
